This is how I choose appliance repair.

I worked for Remington Electric Shaver in Bridgeport for 10 years.  First as a laborer, promoted to a machine operator.  To further my career I went to school on my own at Bullard Havens Technical School at night for blue print reading and tool making.  It  took a number of years to work my way up.  Just when things started going good outsourcing was starting to effect our work. 

Our company had reassured us our jobs were safe and had just reported to the newspaper they didn't anticipate any layoffs.  Less then a month after the newspaper article layoffs began. 

I still remember the day in March when 10 of us tool makers were called into the office.  We were given 3 days notice of termination with no chance of being called back. 

I had just purchased my first house.  It took me 5 to 6 years to save that money and raise a family at the same time.  My kids were 5 and 7.  My wife was a stay at home mom.  When I went for my mortgage the bank was assured I would always have employment and overtime every week.

I was able to find work at jobbing shops but they were also dropping out. 
I decided to be in control of my future.  I wanted job security and excellent pay. 

The Remington factory closed and all manufacturing is now done in China. 
I am still going strong since 1978 full time--how ironic. 

For over 30 years I have had job security, excellent pay, no downsizing, or out sourcing myself or my work.  It's impossible!  I choose a career in major appliance repair; a decision I have never regretted. 

I can live anywhere in the country and do appliance repair, so can you.
